Abstract
We present a scaling framework that formally derives the Euler–Vlasov model for thick sprays from the Boltzmann–Enskog equation, a model widely used in engineering applications. The talk will outline how this derivation provides a kinetic–fluid justification for the governing equations, while also highlighting higher-order corrections to the viscous force that are typically neglected due to the use of a volume fraction formulation. These corrections are shown to be of the order of the dispersed phase volume. Our approach extends earlier work by Laurent Desvillettes, François Golse, and Valeria Ricci, who established a formal link between coupled Boltzmann equations for binary mixtures and a Vlasov–Euler system in the context of thin sprays. We will briefly discuss the key differences arising in the thick spray regime.
